A message from KJ…

Hi Friends and Fam -

Just wanted give a shout out to all of the people who check the Dawshonshire site regulary and apologize on my Mom and Dad’s behalf for the lack of content lately. Both my folks have been buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusy. They’re working full time and the house is in complete shambles with a pretty sweet remodel. (New hard wood floors, new doors and all new wood work). What does that mean for me? Well the new floors are soooooooooo much fun. When I’m in my bare feet, I have lots of traction to cruise and with the little felty things on the furniture, I can push the kitchen stools all the way to the front door. Things are gonna look cool when it’s done. And not that I have any trouble sleeping with such loud house mates, but the solid core doors will not only look good but will keep the noise down.

I’ve been having tons of fun this summer - I’m pretty jazzed that this weekend is my b-day. I’ve been overhearing some rumors about a push toy, more matchbox cars… and possibly a “Happy B-day” balloon, but we’ll see what the parents come up with. I’m also lobbying for a big plate of spaghetti for my b-day dinner. I LOVE Spaghetti!!

Please note the unruly head of hair I have right now. Dad is threatening “buzz cut” for my b-day. Not sure if it’ll be that drastic but my parents are definitely preparing for the removal of my wings and the locks on the top of my head.

I am posting a few pics of our 2008 Dawson Day - This year I was awarded the Biggest Owie award. I was up against some serious contendors but since my scare to body size ratio was greater than any of the other owie candidates, I won. Next year we’ll hope that nobody is up for the award and we can celebrate something like biggest doom and gloom randt - typical Dawson Day content. ;)

Mom hiked me up a mountain on the hottest day of the year last week. It was a great ride and a great view! I slept the entire way down.

I’ll have the folks post pics from my b-day haircut, spag dinner and my Monster cake. This weekend is going to be all about me! (Cause the rest of the year isn’t…tee, hee).

 See you around!

~KJ

Summer Fun!

So it’s been a while since we’ve updated the blog. Shame on us because we’ve been having so much fun and have had lots of great photo ops to share with you all.

A few weeks ago we went to the Mchord AFB airshow. Keanon loved it and now spots airplanes in the sky just from the sound. As you can see from the pic here, KJ was well equiped to handle the booming sounds of the F15 flying over head.  As you can also tell from our handsome baby boy, he is growing, growing, growing. On his 10 month b-day, he was given a clean bill of health! He has gained over 4 lbs since his surgery and is not just on the charts for his weight and height but he’s actually in the 50th percentile for height and 25th for his weight. Such a huge win for a little guy who wasn’t even on the charts for his first 6 months of life.

KJ also hasn’t missed a beat has far as his development. We joke about putting at least a little hole back into his heart to reduce this crazy kid’s energy! He’s a speedster, crawling everywhere, cruising from table to chair, pushing anything he can push like stools and chairs around the house, pulling open all of the cupboards and drawers…and climbing up and down our flight of stairs. Yikes! He’s like the energizer bunny!!!

This month he is spending two days a week with Grandmom and Grandad Dawson. With knowing he’ll be with them two days in a row they’ve had the chance to get out and done some fun stuff - like head out to the Woodinville country side to pick berries and enjoy the sun!

It’s hard to believe that Keanon is approaching his 1st birthday! How quickly the time has gone by. At this time last year I was as big as a house and miserable in the heat. This year  the hot weather is so much more fun!

Team Dougie - Huge Success! Race for the Cure.

Thank you to all of the family and friends who donated money to the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure. Our small team raised over $300.00 and had 16 participants…(that includes the wee little ones).

We had excellent weather for the big day.

Special props go out to our race day participants:

CW, DW, and the boss - CJW. As you can see Chelsea did all the work in this race!

Team Cham-bridge  - Dave, Therese (survivor) & Zach, & Ava Chambers with Jen & Jason Cambridge.

The house of Mac - Doug, Claudine, Lil Mac and A-man.

Team Carl-inda Shaw (in celebration of Judy).

And last but not least, Team Dawson - KJ…master of ceremonies.

Team Dougie - Race for the Cure

On June 21st Team Dougie will be hitting the Streets of Seattle for the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure.

Last June my dad was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. He is doing well and is a true fighter…making it through a full mastectomy, months of chemo and radiation and is now in remission back to doing all the things he loves to do. He won’t be able to be there with us as he and mom will be vacationing in Montana but he’ll be there in spirit!

We’ll be walking, with KJ in tow to honor him.

Breast cancer in men is possible and the numbers continue to increase as we become more aware. If you’re interested in supporting us either by participating in the race, or by donating, visit our team web page.

So much to do!

Keanon is a hulkster! It is unbelievable how chubby he’s gotten since his surgery. In a matter of 6 weeks, he’s gained over 3 lbs! I think 2.5

of that is in his cheeks.

This week we’ll be able to lift him under the arms and not have to be so delicate with him. It’s amazing that everything is behind us now.

Last week we received our last mimento from his experience - the actual recording of his surgery. Most of our family members are not ready to see it - it’s still just too soon for them, but being so interested in what was done to our son and with such amazement and appreciation for moderm medicine, me and Jim pulled up a chair, poured ourselves a beverage and watched the entire two hour procedure to fix KJ’s heart.

It was incredible! As we watched the surgeon working away on our big screen television, I couldn’t help feel emotional about it. Not because it was graphic or too much gore, but because my son was right next to me, squeeking and squeeling and bouncing in his exersaucer as if nothing had ever been done to him. He is the happiest baby and he looks and obviously feels so good. The most overwhelming part was the realization that right then and there, I was watching the moment my son’s life was saved. Gulp.

We were so intrigued by it all. The technique, the skill, the tools…Keanon’s hole was the size of the Dr.’s thumb pad. So bigger than a nickle and just smaller than a quarter. So for a heart that is not much bigger than KJ’s own fist, that is a significant hole!

Anyhow, Keanon will always have his scar to tell stories about. And now, when he’s old he enough he can watch it himself and be proud of being part of a medical miracle. Maybe it’ll inspire him to go into the medical field?

So on to better things - We finally have gotten our garden planted and Jim has been working so hard at spreading 10 yards of soil to different parts of the yard, garden and planters. I can’t take credit for any of it. Me and KJ spend most of our time sticking to his intense eating schedule. All the time in between, we’ll get out and supervise while Jim is hard at work!

I got to spend an overnight with girlfriends in Seattle this last weekend. I was so spoiled spending Saturday at the spa and then enjoying such awesome company
